Steamed Hilsa(Bhapa Ilish )


Recipe for Steamed Hilsa (Bhapa Ilish)

Preparation time :30 minutes

Ingredients :

  • Hilsa fish (ilish mach) 500 gm
  • Yellow mustard seeds 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tbsp
  • Poppy seeds 1 tbsp
  • Hung Yogurt (curd) 2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Kashmiri red chilli powder 1/2 tsp
  • Green chillis 4 pieces
  • Grated coconut 1 tbsp (optional)
  • Mustard oil 4 tbsp
How to make Steamed Hilsa :

  • Wash the fish well and clean it from inside.Tap dry the steak of  hilsa with kitchen towel and keep aside.
  • Take the small bowl with 1/2 cup plain water and soak yellow mustard seeds,mustard seeds,poppy seeds for 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes drain the water. Take a small blender jar add with both mustard seeds,poppy seeds(instead of poppy seeds you can add  a little grated coconut),1-2 green chillies,salt and 2 -3 tbsp plain water.
  • Grind the above to make a thick and smooth paste.
  • Take in a bowl add the above smooth paste,add hung yogurt,turmeric powder,red chilli powder,salt to taste and mustard oil to it and mix it well.You may add a couple of tablespoons of water to the spice paste.
  • Transfer the paste in a big stainless steel bowl with a lid.Add the pieces of HILSA (ilish) and coat with the smooth mustard and yogurt paste.Slit the remaining green chillies and add it to the fish.Pour the few drops of mustard oil on top.Close the lid and set aside.
  • Take a big saucepan,covered with a lid or take a pressure cooker.Add 2 cups of water.
  • Place the bowl carefully and close the lid.Heat at medium flame and let it cook for 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Switch off the flame and set aside covered for 5 minutes.If you are using a pressure cooker, cook until two whistles on medium flame.Let the pressure release on its own and then open the lid of the pressure cooker.
  • Take out the bowl very carefully and open the lid. 
  • Serve hot  Steamed Hilsa(Bhapa Ilish) with steamed white rice.
